In Chapter Six of The Power of Awareness, Neville Goddard shares a powerful insight:
"When you know what you want, you must deliberately focus your attention on the feeling of your wish fulfilled until that feeling fills the mind and crowds all other ideas out of consciousness."
But how do you actually crowd out other thoughts and align your focus with what you want?
The key is learning to direct your attention intentionally and this does not mean to resist or fight against what you don’t want, but by consciously shifting your focus toward your desired state.
In this post, I’ll share a simple evening routine designed to help you do just that. By practicing this nightly, you’ll naturally begin to embody your ideal self and step into the life you truly want.
The Secret to Success
Neville Goddard explains that the great secret of success is focusing attention on the feeling of the wish fulfilled without distractions. The thoughts that dominate your consciousness drive your actions and shape your reality.
If you’ve been trying to make changes in your life, one of the best places to start is by observing your current behaviors - both mental and physical. You can only change something you are aware needs to be changed.
Pay attention to what thoughts and emotions dominate your daily experience. These will create your current state and shape what you experience.
Your state -your beliefs about yourself - determines what you experience in life. And here’s the thing: your state isn’t just one fixed belief; it’s made up of many different ideas about who you are and what’s possible for you.
Some people think you need high self-esteem to manifest what you want, but that’s not necessarily true. You can have multiple beliefs that shape your reality in different ways. For example, you can feel that you always receive attention from people but not understand why because you don't see yourself as all that great.
Why Your Pre-Sleep Routine Matters
One of Neville Goddard’s most well-known techniques is State Akin to Sleep (SATS), which is drifting off to sleep in the feeling of your wish fulfilled.
If you go to bed dwelling on worries or replaying negative events from the day, your subconscious will reinforce those patterns. You see, our brains are designed to seek confirmation of what you believe is true. If you keep telling yourself nothing ever works out for you, that is what you will continue to see - all the ways nothing ever works out.
This is very well explained in this article from Simply Psychology, which states:
Confirmation bias in psychology is the tendency to favor information that confirms existing beliefs or values. People exhibiting this bias are likely to seek out, interpret, remember, and give more weight to evidence that supports their views, while ignoring, dismissing, or undervaluing the relevance of evidence that contradicts them.
On the other hand, if you fall asleep while focusing on your desired state, your subconscious will begin to shift toward that reality. This is why your evening routine is so important - it literally sets the tone for your subconscious mind as you sleep.
The 3R's Method
I’ve created a simple system I call the 3 R’s: Refresh, Renew, and Reflect. This routine helps you transition into a state of calm, focus, and alignment before bed.
Here’s how it works:
Refresh: Cleanse your Body
This step is about physically cleansing your body. It is a transition into your night routine as well as a new self-care habit.
You can:
Take a shower or bath (I personally love magnesium baths)
Wash your face or feet
Do any self-care ritual that makes you feel refreshed and cared for
Renew: True Renewal of your Mind
This step is about removing distractions and choosing your focus before bed. You will spend time on activities that are focused on taking care of your mind, relaxing, and getting ready to drift off to sleep in the state you want to embody.
Put your phone away at least an hour before sleep. This is because you want to pick your thoughts, not pick them up from what you see online scrolling your phone before bed.
Use this time to focus on an activity for your mind - you can meditate, doing breathing exercises, pray, read a book, or take a walk outside (device free).
Reflect: Align to your Ideal Self
Now it is time to review your day with an unbiased and non-judgmental lens of the areas you aligned to the self you want to embody and note habits/routines you could improve.
The point is not to be upset with yourself but become aware of the areas you want to change. This is also the time you will complete a revision exercise.
Doing this will shift your state perfectly as you drift off to sleep.
Final Thoughts
Your attention is extremely powerful. What you focus on expands. By setting up a nightly routine that refreshes your mind and body, disconnects you from distractions, and aligns you with your ideal self, you’ll begin to see real shifts in your life.
