How to Build Confidence: 3 Key Shifts You Can Make Today

Updated: Jul 7

Do you consider yourself a confident person? Or do you often question how you show up in the world? Do you doubt your own abilities?

Do you ever look at others and think, "How come they have this figured out and radiate confidence while I am struggling?" Have you wondered why you weren't born with that same assurance?

Well, I'm here to tell you: confidence is not something you're born with. It's something you build. It's a skill. You can absolutely learn how to manifest confidence, even if it feels miles away right now.

In this week's podcast episode, I shared three shifts you can start today to create confidence from the inside out. These aren’t about "faking it 'til you make it." Instead, they focus on transforming your identity into the person who feels good in their own skin and is living the life they want.

Step 1: Mental Rehearsal

High-level athletes do it. Performers do it. And if you want to manifest confidence, you should do it too. This technique is known as mental rehearsal, visualization, or pre-paving. Whatever you call it, it works wonders.

Take Michael Phelps as an example. He mentally rehearsed every race, even those where things went wrong. This preparation allowed him to perform at his best, even when his goggles filled with water during a world-record-breaking swim.

You can adopt the same practice. Visualize a successful work presentation. Picture yourself walking into the room, delivering your message clearly, and leaving with a sense of pride. Imagine the Vice President nodding in approval. Hear someone saying, "You nailed that!"

If visualization is challenging for you, don’t worry. Focus on feeling it instead. Engage your senses. Hear the applause. See the smiles.

Step 2: Show Up for Yourself

Confidence builds when you consistently keep promises to yourself. This may sound simple, but it’s about trusting your word. The more you show up for yourself, the more faith you cultivate in your abilities.

Begin with small steps. Whether it's taking a walk, drinking more water, or speaking up in a meeting, showing up matters. Remember, starting small is perfectly fine.

This is identity work. Every time you follow through on a commitment, you're casting a vote for the version of you who is confident, consistent, and committed. This is also the Law of Assumption in action!

Step 3: Change How You Talk to Yourself

Your words are powerful. The way you speak to yourself shapes your identity. Saying, "I'm an anxious person," reinforces that anxiety as a core part of who you are. In contrast, saying, "I feel anxious right now," recognizes it as a temporary feeling, not a permanent state.

As Neville Goddard wisely stated, the only reason you aren't what you want to be is your inability to believe that you already are it. The shift starts with your self-talk. Be gentle, be encouraging, and be intentional with your words.

Additional Ways to Build Confidence

Embrace Self-Compassion

Self-compassion is crucial. Treat yourself with the same kindness that you would offer a friend facing self-doubt. Recognize that everyone has moments of insecurity. It’s a part of being human, and it's completely normal.

Set Achievable Goals

Setting small, achievable goals can lead to big changes. Break tasks down into manageable steps. Celebrate your victories along the way, no matter how small they may seem. Each success is a building block for your confidence.

Surround Yourself with Positivity

The people you surround yourself with can impact your confidence. Seek relationships that lift you up and support your growth. Positive reinforcement from others can help change your self-perception and enhance your belief in your capabilities.

Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is another powerful tool. Each day, take a moment to reflect on what you appreciate about yourself. This practice shifts your focus from self-critique to self-love. It encourages a more confident mindset over time.

Seek Inspiration

Read inspiring books or listen to motivational speakers. Hearing stories of others who have overcome their insecurities can be incredibly empowering. It can also provide you with practical strategies to apply.

Manifesting Your Ideal Self

You don’t have to wait to become the confident version of yourself. You can start manifesting that confidence now by:

  • Rehearsing your success

  • Showing up consistently

  • Speaking to yourself with love and truth
