Understanding SATS: What Is It?
“One-third of our lives is spent asleep.”
And you can use that time with intention, the intention to improve your life. Neville Goddard, my favorite mystic, would say that this window between wakefulness and sleep is the most powerful moment of your entire day.
Let’s talk about SATS - State Akin to Sleep. It’s Neville’s most well-known technique although a lot of people are confused about what it actually is and how to use it.
I have changed my life using SATS along with Neville’s other teachings to completely change my life and you can too.
First, what is SATS
SATS stands for “State Akin to Sleep,” and it’s exactly what it sounds like: that floaty, fuzzy-headed state right before you fall asleep. Not quite dreaming. Not quite awake. It’s that perfect time where your conscious mind winds down and your subconscious mind steps forward.
Neville believed this is the best time to impress your subconscious. And why is that important? Because your subconscious is the engine driving your reality. It doesn’t ask questions. It doesn’t debate. It just accepts. And then it goes to work filtering your world, shaping your behavior, and literally creating the reality you live in.
Sound too mystical to be true? Neuroscience is actually catching up - studies now show how repeated thoughts change brain patterns and behavior over time. Neville was just ahead of his time.
Okay, But How Do I Actually Use It?
Let me keep this simple and real. Because trust me, I’ve heard the same confusing explanations online and I’ve fallen down those YouTube (and Reddit) rabbit holes too.
Here’s how I do it in my own life:
Observe First
You can only change that which you are aware of. So, before you try to do anything, take a moment to get curious. What are you thinking as you fall asleep each night?
Are you replaying stressful moments from the day? Are you listing all the things that didn’t get done? Are you quietly beating yourself up for not being “farther along”?
If so, welcome to being human. But now that you know… let’s change it.
Create the feeling using your gifts
Neville says “feeling is the secret,” and I’ve found that to be 100% true. You’re not trying to script out your future like a movie. You’re trying to feel like the version of you who already has what you want.
Not a strong visualizer? Same, but I had found online that most equaled SATS to visualizing and that isn’t the case. You can use any sense that you are gifted with - like, I can HEAR a phone conversation to create the feeling of the wish fulfilled. You don’t have to visualize in order to manifest.
Repeat It Until It’s Real.
At first, it might feel fake. That’s okay. Your brain is just used to a different bedtime story. But the more you return to that feeling, the more natural it becomes. And here’s the wild part: your brain will start looking for evidence to match it.
There’s this study I love about people who identify as either “lucky” or “unlucky.” Both groups were given a newspaper and asked to count the photos. On the first page, in big bold letters, it literally said, “There are 43 photos in this paper. Stop counting.”
The lucky folks saw it. The unlucky ones didn’t.
Your brain filters your world based on what you assume is true. SATS helps you change that filter.
Real Talk: Why I Hesitated to Share This
I’ve been hesitant to talk about Neville and these teachings. Not because I don’t believe in them - I do. But because I worried people would think I’d gone off the deep end. That the “imagining creates reality” stuff would make people roll their eyes.
But the truth is, I’ve used this. I do use this. I’ve visualized specific conversations and messages - I have literally had things parroted back to me. I’ve shifted emotional states. I’ve used it for financial stress. It’s quiet, powerful, and deeply personal.
I believe we are the creators of our lives. And while I don’t believe in bypassing real pain or pretending everything’s fine when it’s not, I do believe that the way we speak to ourselves - especially in those sleepy in-between moments - matters more than we think.
Use the SATS Technique
If you’re new to this or have struggled to get this to work for you, don’t overcomplicate it. Try this simple routine I recommend to clients and use myself:
1. Refresh – Cleanse your body. Wash your face. Brush your teeth. Physically reset.
2. Renew – Feed your mind. Read a few pages. Journal. Listen to calming music. Breathe.
3. Reflect – Ask: What do I wish went differently today? What intention do I want to set for tomorrow?
Then… get comfy. Let your body relax. Feel your wish fulfilled. And drift off in that feeling. No pressure. No perfection. Just practice.
One Final Thought…
You don’t need to be perfect at this. You just need to start. One new thought at bedtime. One shift in what you assume is possible.
And if this resonated? Please send it to a friend. I truly want more people - especially those of us over 35 who are done waiting for life to get better - to know that they can create something better.
It’s a quiet decision, made night after night, to fall asleep as the person you’re becoming.
Wishing you all the best,
Cecilia
P.S. If you want to read more about Neville’s work, I highly recommend Feeling is the Secret. It’s short. It’s free online. And it’s beautiful.
Wishing you all the best,
Cecilia
